Difficult Decision To Make

It can be a very difficult decision when deciding whether to place an elderly family member in long term institutional care. In cases where limited care and life-alarm services are not enough, it becomes a necessity for an elderly or disabled person be placed in a full-time care facility. It can be traumatic for both the family member and the elderly person being placed into care. Most family members do not resort to institutional care unless 24-hour care is needed or the care is too strenuous or difficult to handle.

Long Term Institutional Care

The quality of long term institutional care has improved over the years. Choosing an institution can be difficult. Most elderly people prefer to stay in their own home but this is not always possible. When you do decide on a place, many visits will probably be necessary to assure you that you are making a good decision. If possible, include the elderly person being cared for in on making the decision. This may make the transition more comfortable. If you know that your loved one loves the outdoors, ask how much time will be spent outdoors such as walking through the garden or just sitting and enjoying nature. Find out what type of activities or entertainment will be offered. When visiting, sit and observe. Make sure the you address all concerns with the institution’s staff.

Women out number men in nursing home by a rate of three to one. This difference may reflect that elderly men, more so than elderly women, have a spouse at home to care for them. Elderly whites outnumber elderly blacks by rate of nine to one. This difference may reflect that blacks have more family of cultural support at home.

Cost Cf Care

The cost of care can also play a major factor in deciding on a place. Medicare and private insurance generally pay only a fraction of the cost of nursing home care. Patients usually pay over 45 percent of costs. This can deplete a person’s assets and leave them with few resources if or when they are able to return home. It can also put a strain on the elderly person’s spouse.

It can be a difficult decision when deciding to put a loved one in long term institutional care. It takes careful planning. You need to weigh the pros and cons before you make this decision. The main purpose of this decision is to protect your loved one and give them the best care possible. No one wants to be away from family members or stop them from living in their own home, but it is sometimes best given the circumstances.
