Regular Social Security

Many seniors receiving regular social security are not aware they may also qualify for supplemental security income (SSI) to supplement their social security benefits. Congress approved the supplemental security income program in 1972 to help older people and others in need whose income falls below the poverty level. This is the largest cash assistance program in the United States for elderly people in need. You may be able to qualify for supplemental security income if you are 65 or older, blind, or disabled United States resident and have little or no income with limited resources.

Cover Basic Needs

SSI is meant to help provide enough cash to cover basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. The amount of the benefits you can receive vary from state to state and is also based on your income, living arrangements and other factors. The maximum Federal benefit changes yearly. Effective January 1, 2009, the Federal maximum benefit rate is $674 for an individual and $1,011 for a couple. SSI benefits do not depend on your prior work history or that of a spouse. Your current total income including social security cannot exceed $2000 per individual or $3000 for a couple. In other words, you will not qualify if you receive over this amount for your total household income.

Apply For Benefits

There are several ways to apply for benefits. You can call 1-800-772-1213 to make an appointment. You can walk into and office and apply, although this will mean a longer wait to see a representative. You can also make an appointment for a telephone application. You don't have to go alone when applying. You may appoint a family member or someone you trust to be your representative. You must sign a statement naming your representative and also fill out an "Appointment of Representative" form. This person can then speak for you or help you with application process.

If you are in need of this help apply as soon as possible. If approved, benefits are usually paid from the date of your application. For more information, the government has a website (www.ssa.gov) that goes into great detail involving the application process.
