What is Normal Aging?

The normal aging process happens during our lifespan. We are all involved in this process. There is no escaping it. When we are young, aging is associated with growth, maturation, and discovery. Many human abilities peak before age 30, while other abilities continue to grow through life. Normal aging is not a bad thing, merely a fact of life. A great majority of those over age 65 today are healthy, happy and fully independent. There are some individuals who begin to experience changes and perceive them as signs of deterioration or decline. We must try to forget the stereotypes and look at older individuals as unique individuals.

Things you can do to decelerate the aging process:

  • You can start by eating a healthy balanced
  • Take daily calcium and vitamin D, and avoiding lifestyle choices that weaken bones (such as too much caffeine or smoking). Your doctor may also recommend a bone-protecting medicine.
  • Building or keeping your muscle mass allows your metabolism to remain the same or increase. strength training is an especially good way to build or keep your muscle mass.
  • You can slow skin aging by using moisturizer and protecting the skin from the sun with sunscreen and sun-protective clothing, such as a hat or cap.
  • You can help keep your brain sharp with regular social activity; "mental exercise," such as doing crossword puzzles and reading; and physical activity, which increases blood and oxygen flow to the brain.

Housing

Eventually the cumulative effect of these changes makes a person become fragile. Having the security of a Life-Service Alarm which allows an older person to easily notify someone that they need help can prolong independence. Life-Service Alarm systems bring peace of mind for both those who are aging and those who are responsible for their safety.

The aging process brings social and emotional change into our lives. Physical losses and social losses that can accompany aging may be very difficult emotionally. Grief and sadness are normal reactions to such losses. We cannot stamp out these reactions in ourselves. Just as the physical losses of later life can be compensated for, social and emotional losses be overcome.

Changes aging individuals

The changes aging individuals experience are not necessarily harmful. How your body ages depends in part on your family (genetic) patterns of aging. But your lifestyle choices have a more powerful impact on how well your body ages. Fortunately, you can control your lifestyle choices. There is a slowing down of functions which goes forward throughout adulthood.

There is a loss of function of bodily organs and hair thins and turns gray. Skin thins and becomes less elastic and starts to sag. The production of digestive enzymes diminishes, reducing the body's ability to break down and absorb the nutrition from food. Some of these losses may not be noticeable until much later in life. Lifestyle choices, genetics, illnesses and injuries affect the rate of normal aging, yet older people want to retain independence as long as possible. People who remain in their own homes function better mentally and are emotionally healthier. A system such as Life-Service Alarm can ease the minds of those who care about older family members.

Physical aging process.

The physical aging process can be influenced in a variety of ways. Exercise, nutrition and social interaction can affect the aging process. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet and social involvement can significantly decelerate the aging process.

The following are normal signs of aging. Some of these changes may apply to you. Others may not. A healthy lifestyle may slow many of these effects of aging:

  • Decreased vision
  • Hearing loss
  • Decreased taste buds and saliva
  • Decreased sensitivity to touch and ability to smell.
  • Increased bladder frequency in urination.
  • Body Fat increases until middle age, stabilizes and then decreases later in life.
  • Around age 35, bones lose minerals faster than they are replaced and can lead to arthritis and osteoporosis.
  • By age 80, it's common to have lost as much as 2in. in height.
  • Arteries stiffen with age causing arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
  • Brain loses some of the structures that connect the nerve cells, and the function of the cells themselves is diminished.
  • Heart muscle thickens with age. Maximum pumping rate and the body's ability to extract oxygen from the blood both diminish with age.
  • Kidneys shrink and become less efficient.
  • Lung tissue, somewhere around age 20, begins to lose its elasticity, and rib cage muscles shrink progressively. Maximum breathing capacity diminishes with each decade of life.
  • Metabolism slows greatly with age.
  • Muscle mass decline, especially with lack of exercise.
  • Nails grow more slowly and skin is more dry and wrinkled. The skin also heals more slowly.
  • Women go through menopause where vaginal lubrication decreases and sexual tissues atrophy.
  • Men' sperm production decreases and the prostate enlarges.
  • Hormone levels decrease.
